# Key parameters to Choose a gearbox

When choosing a gearbox, there are a few key parameters to keep in mind. First, you need to calculate the output shaft torque of the gearbox. Second, you should calculate the maximum speed of the transmission mechanism. Third, you need to consider the installation method of the transmission mechanism. Fourth, the precision of the gearbox transmission needs to be chosen. Finally, you need to configure the gearbox interface. Let's dive into the details of how to choose a gearbox based on these aspects.

## 1. Calculating the Output Shaft Torque of the Gearbox

The output torque of the gearbox is the torque required by the transmission mechanism. The purpose of selecting a gearbox is to obtain the motor's rated torque (minimizing costs) plus the gearbox's torque increase, resulting in a larger torque output. Gearboxes have many advantages in mechanical applications, such as increasing torque, reducing inertia, minimizing the impact of the electric motor on the servo motor, and automatically locking the electric motor.

The core value is to increase torque. Therefore, when confirming the required torque of the driving mechanism, we compare the torque of the selected servo motor. The ratio of these two torques is the reduction ratio of the selected gearbox. Typically, we add some redundancy to the final torque of the mechanism, so the transmission ratio will be slightly higher.

## 2. Calculating the Maximum Speed of the Motor

The maximum speed of the transmission mechanism must be confirmed by mechanical design engineers. The selection of the reduction ratio is related to the parameters, and the reduction ratio may not necessarily increase indefinitely. As the reduction ratio increases, the torque increases, but the output speed decreases, affecting the overall operating speed of the motor.

Therefore, there needs to be a balance between torque and speed. While meeting the transmission speed of the mechanical mechanism, it is reasonable to increase the reduction ratio and transmission torque as much as possible. However, the transmission speed of the transmission mechanism is not entirely determined by the gearbox. The speed of the servo motor, the lead of the drive screw, and the size of the gears are also decisive factors. Therefore, we need to consider comprehensively during structural design, but the size of the reduction ratio is also a decisive factor that requires our attention.

## 3. Choosing the Installation Method of the Transmission Mechanism

In addition to the above parameter selection, when choosing a gearbox, you should also select the type and installation method of the gearbox, such as planetary gearbox, worm gearbox, coaxial direct connection, or 90° vertical installation. The selection of the worm gearbox is particularly relevant to specific application scenarios. For example, if the entire action mechanism needs to be locked, or if the transmission device is vertically installed to prevent the mechanism from falling off in the event of a power outage, a worm gearbox is usually chosen. Therefore, choosing the installation method is crucial and should not be arbitrary.

## 4. Choosing the Transmission Precision of the Gearbox

The transmission precision of the gearbox depends entirely on the precision requirements of the transmission mechanism you design. Of course, the actual cost depends on matching the corresponding parameters. The higher the precision, the higher the cost, which may be unacceptable in many cases, especially for some good brands.
